Underground Gallery Presents “Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life”
September 15, 2006 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm EDT
Working people are often defined solely by their occupation, yet there is so much more to the story. Each of our lives is comprised of layer upon layer of people*, places, and events that have shaped who we are. In Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life, we see images of family, work, community, and self that reveal the true story of what it means to be a Registered Nurse, Security Guard, or Teacher, among many other professions, as seen through the eyes of the workers themselves. Unseen America NYS is an innovative arts project that gives workers the tools to document their own experience and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers. The program embodies the transformative power of looking, for a moment, through another’s eyes. The goal is to amplify the creativity and vision of voices that often go unheard, and to use artistic expression as an exercise in democracy with the integration of these voices into the larger social and cultural fabric of the nation. A collaboration of the Workforce Development Institute, NYS AFL-CIO, and Bread and Roses Cultural Project of 1199 SEIU. This exhibit will be on view from September 15th through October 14th, 2006.
