Talk by Journalist Laura Flanders
September 25, 2007 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
The longtime journalist, author and radio producer will speak about the challenge and necessity of creating for-the-people media in this era of corporate consolidation. Her most recent book is Blue Grit: Making Improbable, Impossible and Inspirational Change in America (The Penguin Press, 2007).
Currently the host of RadioNation on AirAmerica, Flanders founded the Women’s Desk at the media watch group FAIR and for more than ten years produced and hosted CounterSpin, FAIR’s nationally-syndicated radio program.
In 2004 she wrote the NY Times best-seller Bushwomen: Tales of a Cynical Species (Verso), an investigation into the women in George W. Bush’s Cabinet, and compiled The W Effect: Sexual Politics in the Age of Bush (Feminist Press). She also wrote Real Majority, Media Minority: The Cost of Sidelining Women in Reporting (Common Courage Press, 1997). Publisher’s Weekly said her writing is “fierce, funny and intelligent” and Katha Pollitt agreed, calling her work “funny, angry, fact filled and brilliant” while Susan Faludi wrote, “if only there were a hundred of her!”
