HMM Climate Special Dec 25 2024
On the Hudson Mohawk Magazine we are doing an end of the year special on climate, which we cover extensively throughout the year. Climate change poses an existential threat to life on the planet. One of the main outcomes of the Paris climate accords a decade ago was an agreement that keeping global warming below a 1.5 degree celsius increase was essential to protect human life on the planet. Unfortunately, for the last 15 month, global warming has already breached the 1.5 degree target, though scientists are not sure if this is a permanent breach. While strong climate action is needed at all levels of government, the need for strong action at the state is even more imperative with the re-election of climate denier Donald Trump. Unfortunately, Governor Hochul in the last year has been moving to slow down climate action/ We have five segments that we will play The first will be about the Dec. 10 to 12 occupation of the Capitol to convince the Governor to sign the climate superfund act. Then we hear from journalist Karl Grossman about Hochul’s plan to promote nuclear power. Next will be a segment on how to convert the Capitol to 100% clean energy. We then hear about the May 3 March to get banks to stop financing fossil fuels. We finish with a response to the decision by NYS State Comptroller to largely reverse his commitment to divest billions of dollars in the state’s pension plan from large oil and gas companies.
