Be The Media! Workshop with Jesse Stiles: Sound On Location
April 15, 2007 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
Making high-quality sound recordings in remote locations is an essential part of nearly every form of media production. The production of film, video, radio podcasts, videblogs, etc. all involve making sound recordings in a wide variety of environments. The quality and intelligibility of your soundtrack is critical in conveying your message and placing your audience “in the scene.” In this workshop we will introduce you to the essential tools of on-location sound recording (or “field recording”), go over important techniques to improve the quality of your sound recordings, and we take microphones to the streets of Troy to put our skills into practice. HM IMG will be providing basic sound recording equipment for the workshop. Bring your own mics, take recorders, DAT recorders, solid state recorders, or video cameras to the workshop and we’ll check them out to see how they can be put to their best use for sound-recording. Our approach will emphasize field recording on a budget.
Jesse Stiles is a local musician, sound designer, and sound engineer. He has recently produced sonic environments for The Field Museum where he used remote sound recordings to sculpt the sound world of woolly mammoths in ancient America. He is currently the sound designer and senior sound editor for an IMAX film being produced by Nanotoon Entertainment. Stiles also makes use of field recordings in his music practice.
We are committed to lowering the barriers to access for events at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. For people who are hard of hearing or deaf, blind or low-vision, or whose physical limitations can interfere with a satisfying experience, let us know two weeks in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.
