“Witches in Exile” with Filmmaker Allison Berg
October 5, 2006 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm EDT
Africa deals with its internal pressure in specifically African ways, as revealed in Allison Berg’s lucid, fascinating and wide-ranging study of how witch hunts break out at times of social and economic stress and about the camps in Ghana that provide a haven for accused women.
In Ghana, women accused of witchcraft are torn from their families and banished to isolated “witch villages.” Witches in Exile (2004) filmmaker Allison Berg follows accused witches through their daily struggle to survive in the Kukuo Witches Camp in Northern Ghana. As government agencies attempt to abolish this age-old tradition, these women find themselves caught between their society’s deeply rooted beliefs and its drive toward modernization. Witches in Exile captures a country at a dramatic and emotional crossroads. Potluck with the filmmaker precedes the screening.
