Our Vision
The Sanctuary recognizes the role that internships play in gaining valuable work experience, building a network, and developing a portfolio. The Sanctuary also recognizes the benefit to our organization of working with curious and creative individuals. We take great care to ensure that these internships are mutually beneficial and allow a great deal of freedom in developing ones own voice and vision within our core mission of using art, science, and participatory action to promote social and environmental justice and freedom of creative expression.
Investing in the Future
This internship is ideal for individuals interested in the intersections of media, art, and science, and for those who who want to experience these tools as catalysts for activism, change, and building and supporting community. Interns are required to be:
- Self-motivated and reliable
- Interested in non-commercial community media
- Able to work and collaborate with a diverse community
An internship at the Sanctuary allows you to gain experience in a nonprofit community media and arts center setting, gain free admission to events and workshops (during your internship), access media production equipment (for projects related to The Sanctuary), get training on media equipment (as we are able), see the inner workings of a grassroots nonprofit, and meet interesting artists and activists.

Applications are accepted at any time but we encourage you to submit an application at least one month before the beginning of an internship, which typically begin in January, June, and September.
Internship Areas of Focus
RADIO – Host, engineer, or produce content for Hudson Mohawk Magazine. As a radio producer you have the opportunity to create a series of interviews investigating an issue or theme of your interest.
ARCHIVING – Dive deep into the history of the Sanctuary. Ensure that the previous work of the Sanctuary doesn’t get lost by working with our archive and database, photographs, artwork, or with our website.
SOCIAL MEDIA – Tell the story of the Sanctuary on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Showcase work being created, the people creating the work, and the ideas behind them.
VIDEO – Operate a camera and document projects taking place or work in post production on previously recorded materials to be posted on Sanctuary TV.
EVENTS – Organize events in advance and help ensure a smooth run on the day with tasks from hospitality to staffing the door to set up and break down.
OUTREACH – Connect with community individuals and groups. Foster the ever growing network in our immediate community and beyond.
TECH INFRASTRUCTURE – Maintain and troubleshoot tech equipment. Work the important behind-the-scenes roles that are vital to our operation.
NONPROFIT ADMINISTRATION – Maintain our donor and volunteer databases, take care of our physical space with organizing materials and supporting projects.
ACCESSIBILITY – Support the ongoing maintenance to make our work accessible to all people in our physical and digital spaces.
COMMUNITY HEALTH – Support the work of the People’s Health Sanctuary through event planning and support, documentation, and community net-working.
COMMUNITY SCIENCE – Engage with the air, soil and water monitoring research happening at NATURE Lab, combining art, science and media-making to support environmental justice.
LAND STEWARDSHIP – Participate in the hands-on maintenance of our food forests and gardens, and help support community events.
What to Expect
Internships can be done in-person, hybrid, or remotely.
Schedules will vary from semester to semester. Ideally interns will work for blocks of time (4-6 hours) 1 or 2 days a week during office hours. Evening and weekend hours during events are also encouraged. We will talk with you about your availability after you have applied.
Interns are expected to be self-motivated with their projects and to communicate with support staff effectively.
Getting Credit
Academic credit is available upon request. We may also be able to work with you to arrange an independent study for credit. An internship is not limited to students.
