Why Art, Science & Media

Art and science are attempts to understand and describe the world around us–media is the force that communicates them. It’s the trinity underlying our work at The Sanctuary for Independent Media.

Even as media, science and art undergo withering attacks at the national level, in the NY Capital Region we are steadily building the infrastructure and programming necessary to project a nuanced vision of just, peaceful and sustainable life on Earth. And we’ve made big progress this year:

  • September marks the one-year anniversary of our daily Hudson Mohawk Magazine, a volunteer-driven local news hour distributed on WOOC 105.3 FM, MediaSanctuary.org and via podcast
  • With your help we met our fundraising needs for the future NATURE Lab Urban Environmental Education Center! Construction is underway and science workshops continue apace in the meantime
  • This is our 25th performance and presenting season at The Sanctuary for Independent Media! Come join us as we host a wide range of local, national and internationally-known artists working in a variety of disciplines

On Wednesday, September 26 we celebrate these accomplishments and the start of our Fall 2018 season with Delgrès. The exuberant Afro-Caribbean deep roots trio is named after Louis Delgrès, a hero in the 1802 fight against Napoleon’s re-imposition of slavery. It’s the first of a series of great events culminating in our 7th annual North Troy Justice & Peace Holiday Celebration.

There’s also a special off-campus event at The Egg in Albany on October 25th to benefit WOOC 105.3 FM. Once again we are hosting the magnificent South African singer/songwriter Vusi Mahlasela–this time with his full band! We commemorate the first quarter century after apartheid and what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday.

The struggle for truth and rights is playing out on a vast battleground–with silenced voices, disappearing data and growing authoritarianism in the shadow of massive political and environmental crises. We’re living in an era during which propaganda rules and dissent is crushed. But we know that lives other than our own have value. Contribute to our efforts and let your voice be heard.

How can you act in solidarity? So many ways! Please consider becoming a volunteer, donating equipment, or signing up as a sustainer.

“I’m a Sustainer because I believe it’s important to have a space in the community that’s accessible for artists, activists and media makers. The Sanctuary provides that space for us to meet in one place and actively try to change things around us. Please become a Sustainer. Even if you can give only $2, $3, $5 per month—we really need sanctuary in this community!”
