Troy venue to host live music, documentaries, NXIVM discussion

A free event celebrating the work of Riverkeeper volunteers on the Hudson River will launch the fall season at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, located at the 3361 Sixth Ave.
The season will feature musical performances, speakers, films, workshops and gallery shows and will conclude Dec. 14 with the free eighth annual North Central Troy Justice and Peace Holiday Celebration.
The schedule of events is:
1 p.m. Friday, Riverkeeper Community Scientist Celebration with “Source to Sea” documentary screening and community potluck. Co-sponsored by Riverkeeper.
7 p.m. Sunday, RAM, Haiti’s pre-eminent band, performs ancient folkloric drums intertwined with punk rock guitar riffs and swinging Caribbean melodies. $15.
7 p.m. Nov. 15, with a workshop at 4:30 p.m., “Hail Satan?” with Penny Lane. A film about The Satanic Temple, chronicling the rise of a controversial religious movements in America whose commitment to social and political justice has empowered people.
7 p.m. Nov. 18, with a workshop at 4:30 p.m., “Inside NXIVM,” a talk by Chet Hardin, the only journalist to play a midnight game of volleyball with actress Allison Mack, Seagram’s heiress Clare Bronfman and Keith Raniere in 2009, long before the arrests of Raniere and Mack on charges of sex trafficking and forced labor. Hardin’s writing for the Capital Region weekly Metroland was the beginning of the end for NXIVM.
5:30 p.m. Nov. 22, Aizuri Quartet, classical music with diverse points of entry into the string quartet repertoire. Free. 7 p.m. Dec. 4 with a workshop at 4:30 p.m., “The Infiltrators” with Alex Rivera, a film about a rag-tag group of undocumented youth — Dreamers — who deliberately get arrested by Border Patrol to infiltrate a shadowy detention center.
7 p.m. Dec. 6, Christoph Irniger Pilgrim, the quintet founded by Zurich-based tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger, has become one of the most exciting ensembles in young European jazz. This tour introduces its fourth recording, “Crosswinds.” $15.
Noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 14, Eighth annual North Central Troy Justice and Peace Holiday Celebration features free portraits, arts activities, music, free food, a bike giveaway and the lighting of the tree at Freedom Square. Free.
Admission to events is $10, $5 student, unless noted otherwise.
