Drexel University Clinical Professor of Educational Leadership & Management In the School of Education Dr. Joyce Pittman is a first-generation educator and woman of color, who was born and grew up in the deep south. She was an active participant in the civil rights movement in the south, and in September 2012, was recognized by the New York Times, Schools for the Future initiative as a voice of future during an inaugural of this initiative. She is known worldwide by UNESCO members Dr. Pittman was an invited guest panel presenter for The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, is a United Nations entity working for the empowerment of women and has continued to be an active participant in this global network.
Currently, she is the Principal Investigator for the Global-Teach Connection, a Title VI funded partnership between Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania, Middle East and South Asia Area Studies Centers in Philadelphia, PA. The project focuses on curriculum to address gender issues and educational issues related to immigrants or language learners. In addition, she serves on Drexel’s Senate Committee on Academic Affairs (SCAA) and was Research and Development Chair for Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators 2013-2018.
Her career includes a wide network of leadership positions, including that started from being a classroom teacher to National Franchise Consultant and Director of Education for Sylvan Learning Corporation, Director, Educational Testing Service (ETS), Director of Educational Reform Research for United Arab Emirates, Ministry of Education, Assistant to the Provost on Academic Affairs, United Arab Emirates University, UAE interim dean and department chair at Abu Dhabi University, Director of Teaching and Learning and Faculty Development and Curriculum at Qatar University, and founder of the Comprehensive Educational Reform and Technology Initiative (CERTI), University of Cincinnati, a $2.5M teacher training project and more.
She actively serves as journal editor for multiple publications, serves on Board of Directors, World Council on Curriculum & Instruction, a UNESCO-NGO. She is the recipient of the National Digital Equity and Education Award from SITE, Society for Information Technology in Education. Her work has been recognized by US Department of Education, Ministries of Education and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
