Barbara Smith on Democratic Conventions Past and Present
Feminist, civil rights activist, and scholar Barbara Smith attended the protests of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968. She wrote about that historic anti-Vietnam War protest in an essay in her book, “The Truth That Never Hurts” which was reissued in a 25th anniversary edition last year along with the 40th anniversary edition of her book “Homegirls.” She spoke with Moses Nagel about her experience in Chicago then and how it compares to this week as the Democratic Convention returns to Chicago 56 years later.
